VIDEO: Privatizing Public Research

Stemming from its land-grant mission, the University of Minnesota has made discoveries that span the economy, from seat-belts to car engines to apples to sustainable chemistry. There has always been a combination of general and applied research; however, with state funding cuts and expected federal funding cuts, we're going down a path of greater amounts of research funding coming from industry for "applied research," which tends to limit what finding are publicly available. While much of the applied research is important, let's not lose sight of the importance of basic research and development that moves Minnesota forward.
