VIDEO: Moving Mental Health Issues Forward
Unlike heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, those suffering from mental health issues are sometimes stigmatized by society and blamed for their own illnesses. One in five people are affected by someone with mental health problems at some point in their lives. In recent years, health insurance companies and public health services have done a better job funding treatments and medication for common ailments, such as bipolar disorder and severe depression.
However, anticipated health and human services cuts once again threaten funding for those in our community dependent on public mental health programs.
Vail Place is a Twin Cities community club house for adults in recovery for mental health illnesses. We talked to several members about their paths through the health care system.
